Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [भारत]July 15 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday paid floral tributes to former Chief Minister K Kamaraj at his statue on Mount Road in Chennai on the occasion of his 124th birth anniversary. The Chief Minister paid tribute to the late Congress leader by offering flowers and remembered his contribution in the field of development and education of the state.
BJP leaders from Tamil Nadu also paid tribute to the Congress leader.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met K. Paid heartfelt tribute to Kamaraj on his birth anniversary. He described Kamaraj as “a stalwart of India’s independence movement” and an “extraordinary personality” who dedicated his life to the service of the nation.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Kamaraj’s transformative work in the field of education and social welfare in a post on social media platform X. “Remembering Thiru K. Kamaraj ji on his birth anniversary. A stalwart of India’s freedom movement and an extraordinary personality, he dedicated his life to nation-building,” PM Modi posted on Twitter.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that Kamaraj’s vision for an equitable society remains a source of inspiration for the country. The Prime Minister further said, “His unwavering commitment towards areas like education, inclusive growth and welfare of the underprivileged will continue to guide generations.”
Who was Kamaraj?
Kumaraswamy Kamaraj was born on July 15, 1903 in a simple and poor family in a backward area of Tamil Nadu. His schooling lasted only six years. At the age of twelve, he was working as a shop assistant. He was barely fifteen years old when he heard about the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which was a turning point in his life.
Kamaraj was elected unopposed to the Madras Legislative Assembly in 1937. He was elected to it again in 1946. He was also elected to the Constituent Assembly of India in 1946 and later to the Parliament in 1952. He became the Chief Minister of Madras in 1954.
In 1963, he suggested to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru that senior Congress leaders should give up ministerial posts to take up organizational work. This suggestion came to be known as ‘Kamaraj Plan’. He was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1976. (ANI)
