Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala met Tamil Nadu CM Vijay in Chennai and sought support for ‘Operation Toofan’. This is a big anti-narcotics campaign of the Kerala government, which aims to eliminate the drugs mafia.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [भारत]July 15 (ANI): Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala will meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Chennai on Wednesday. The purpose of this meeting is to seek inter-state cooperation for ‘Operation Toofan’, the major anti-narcotics campaign launched by the Kerala government.

Speaking to reporters after the high-level meeting, Chennithala highlighted the success of the ongoing operation and stressed the need for a united front against the drug mafia in South India. “People who were using and selling drugs were arrested. I am here in Chennai to meet Chief Minister Vijay to get his support for this programme,” Chennithala said.

Praise for CM Vijay’s work

Thousands of arrests have been made so far across Kerala under ‘Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt’, launched in June 2026. Hailing the performance of Tamil Nadu’s new TVK-led government that took power earlier this year, Chennithala praised the leadership of Chief Minister Vijay. Kerala Home Minister said, “In the last one month, he has done a lot for the people. People are happy with it… This is a very transparent government. The state will progress under this leadership.”

What is ‘Operation Toofan’?

Earlier, on June 2, Chennithala had said in a post on X that the operation would be carried out in coordination with the health and excise departments and would focus on rooting out drug smuggling. The minister wrote, “‘Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt’. Starting today… Aimed at eliminating the drug mafia in the state in coordination with the health and excise departments, this operation aims to root out the drug menace. This initiative needs prayers and support!”

NCRB figures are worrying

This anti-narcotics campaign has been launched amid growing concerns over the sharp rise in drug-related cases in Kerala. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data showed that Kerala recorded the highest number of NDPS cases in the country in 2023, with 30,697 cases. Ahead of the launch, Kerala Police had appealed for public participation in the campaign. (ANI)
