Telangana Formation Day: How did Telangana enrich the Mughals? For which Aurangzeb waited for years

The biggest turning point in Mughal-Telangana relations came during the time of Aurangzeb.

As soon as the name of Telangana comes, Golconda Fort comes to mind. This fort and the Sultanate around it were famous for wealth, diamonds and trade at that time. There were many forces in India at that time. There were Mughals in the north. There were many sultanates in Deccan. The Qutubshahi Sultanate of Golconda was the most prosperous among them. Therefore the relationship between the Mughals and Telangana was not just about war. It was also related to politics, trade, tax revenue and culture. The date of June 2 is the foundation day of Telangana. This year, Telangana state may have turned 14 years old but it existed during the Mughal period also. Let us know with this excuse that what was the connection of this state with the Mughals?

Golconda Sultanate is called Qutubshahi Sultanate. Its capital became Hyderabad. This sultanate was a major power in the Deccan in the 16th and 17th centuries. The administration system here was strong. Farming also brought income, but the real identity came from diamonds and international trade.

Why was Telangana special?

The name Golconda itself became famous for diamonds in the world. Many historical diamonds are associated with the name Golconda. At that time, diamonds were found in and around the Krishna River. Mines and diamond trade were a major source of income for the state. Diamonds were not just decoration. He was a symbol of power. They were gifts in diplomacy. They were used to meet the expenses of the war. This is the reason why many powers, especially the Mughals, had their eyes on the wealth of Golconda.

Ports, markets and foreign traders

Golconda’s prosperity did not come only from mines. It was also related to maritime trade. Goods used to come and go through the Bay of Bengal and Deccan routes. Cloth, spices, metals, horses, weapons, perfumes, colors and precious stones, everything was bought and sold. European trading companies were also active on the coasts of India. She was also interested in textiles and other items as well as precious stones. In such a situation, Golconda’s economy got connected to the international market. This became even more important for the Mughals, because the Mughal Empire also needed large revenues and stable trade.

Why did the Mughals set their sights on the Deccan?

The Mughal Empire had become strong in North India. But his hold in Deccan was limited. Many sultanates were independent here. They used to fight among themselves many times. Many times she used to form alliances. There were three major reasons for the Mughals to control the Deccan.

  1. Revenue and Wealth: States like Golconda were very prosperous.
  2. Political expansion: The Mughals wanted to see themselves as the power of entire India.
  3. Strategic Security: The independent powers of Deccan could become a challenge to the Mughal borders.

Relationship is not just about sword

Relations between the Mughals and Golconda were not always direct wars. There were many periods when politics of dialogue, treaty and pressure prevailed. Sometimes the Mughals would demand tribute or tax. Sometimes there would be tampering on the borders. Sometimes a dispute between a neighboring state would come in between. The politics of Deccan was very complex. Maratha power was also emerging here, so the Mughals tried many times to gradually increase their influence.

Then came the turning point

The biggest turning point in Mughal-Telangana relations came during the time of Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb stayed in Deccan for a long time. His goal was to bring the major powers of Deccan under Mughal control. Golconda was finally attacked by the Mughals. The fortification was strong. The siege lasted a long time. Nevertheless Golconda was conquered around 1687. This was not the defeat of just one fort. This was the merger of a prosperous sultanate into the Mughal Empire.

Economy was also behind the victory

The causes of war in history often appear to be religious or political. But in the case of Golconda, economy was a big reason. Control over diamonds, trade and tax revenues meant immense wealth. The Mughal administration wanted to invest that money in the needs of its empire. Especially when military operations were going on continuously in Deccan and expenditure was increasing.

Mughal connection of Telangana

After Golconda came under the Mughal Empire, the administration here was molded into a new structure. In the Mughal system, the provinces, parganas and revenue system were more standardized. But at the local level the old officials, landlords and artisans also remained. Many times the new rulers do not completely break the old structure. They run it as per their wish. In this way, power changed in Telangana, but many parts of economic and social life changed gradually.

cultural exchange

The culture of Golconda-Hyderabad was already based in Persian-Deccan colours. The culture of the Mughal court was also Persian influenced. Therefore there were many similarities at the cultural level. Poetry, music, clothing, architecture, gardens, royal rituals – all these were exchanged. Deccan also retained its own special identity. The Deccani dialect and local traditions were strong. This mixture later appears as the distinct culture of Hyderabad.

How did the impact of trade reach the common people?

When trade increases in a state, it is not only the king who becomes rich. Artisans, weavers, traders, transport people, market workers, everyone earns their living. Diamond and cloth trade increased employment in Golconda region. Markets flourish in cities, but during times of war and change of power, pressure on common people also increases. Tax burden, movement of soldiers and instability, all this was the reality of that period.

Why is the relation between Telangana and Mughals important?

The Mughals’ connection with Telangana was not just a story of conquering the fort. This story was from a prosperous region of India. This is the story of the politics hidden behind the shine of diamonds. This is the story of trade routes. This is the story of the complex balance of power in the Deccan. The prosperity of Golconda made it world famous. The same prosperity also made it a major target of Mughal strategy. Ultimately, this chapter of Deccan shows that in history, money, trade and power have always been linked to each other.
