Delhi government will start ‘Arpan’ donation centers at 10 metro stations. There will be donation, recycling and upcycling of old clothes, which will provide environmental protection and employment to women.
The Delhi government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has started a new initiative to promote cleanliness, environment protection and circular economy in Delhi. Under this initiative, people of the capital will now be able to easily donate their old and usable clothes. These clothes will be recycled and upcycled, which will reduce textile waste, reduce pressure on landfills and also create new employment opportunities for women.
For this purpose, an important agreement (MoU) was signed between Delhi Government, DLWO (Delhi Livelihood and Welfare Organisation), DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation), SULM (State Urban Livelihood Mission), ReSpun and Clothes Box Foundation at Delhi Secretariat.

‘Arpan’ donation centers will start at 10 stations of Delhi Metro
Under the agreement, ‘Arpan’ Donation Centers will soon be established at 10 major stations of Delhi Metro. Here citizens will be able to donate their old, clean and usable clothes. Donated clothes will be placed in different categories according to their condition. Arrangements will be made to deliver usable clothes to the needy people, while unusable clothes will be converted into new products through recycling and upcycling.
Textile waste will reduce, environmental protection will get a boost
Every year a large amount of textile waste reaches landfills, which has a serious impact on the environment. This project is considered an important step towards reducing textile waste. Recycling and upcycling will increase re-use of clothes, save natural resources and also help in reducing carbon emissions. This initiative will strengthen the Delhi Government’s vision of a clean, green and sustainable Delhi.
New employment and livelihood opportunities for women
An important objective of this project is to increase the economic participation of women. Activities like sorting, repairing, upcycling and manufacturing new products of old clothes will provide new employment and income opportunities to Self Help Groups and women entrepreneurs. This will also strengthen the economic empowerment of women under the Urban Livelihood Mission (SULM).
Important initiative towards promoting circular economy
Experts believe that reusing and recycling clothes is not only limited to environmental protection, but it is also a big step towards strengthening the circular economy. This will lead to better utilization of resources and the waste clothes will get new utility.
Another step towards clean and green Delhi under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta
Delhi government says that this project will not be limited to just donating clothes, but will also become a medium to increase awareness among the citizens about responsible consumption and environmental protection. The government aims to make the capital a cleaner, greener and sustainable city. ‘Arpan’ donation centers can prove to be an important initiative in this direction.
