story of chaturmas
The sacred story of Chaturmas is related to the sacrifice of demon king. Once King Bali took control over the entire world through sacrifice. He started ruling all the three worlds. Devraj Indra was worried about this. Then all the gods including Indra reached Lord Vishnu for protection. Then Shri Hari took Vaman incarnation and came to ask for donation from King Bali. Lord Vaman asked for three steps of land as donation, but he measured the entire sky and earth in just two steps. Then King Bali asked him to place the third foot on his head.
In this way Lord Vaman freed the three worlds from King Bali and returned to his true form. Lord Vishnu was very pleased with King Bali’s generosity and asked him to ask for a boon. Bali asked the Lord to come and reside with him in the underworld. Lord Vishnu fulfilled the wish of his devotee Bali and went to hell. Here, due to Lord’s absence in Vaikuntha, Goddess Lakshmi became worried. Goddess Lakshmi thought of a plan to free Lord Vishnu from the underworld.
She went to King Bali disguised as a poor woman. The mother tied Rakhi to King Bali considering her as her brother and in return asked for a promise to free Lord Vishnu from the underworld. King Bali gave his promise, but God did not want to disappoint his devotee, so he gave a boon to Bali that he would rest in the underworld for four months every year on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month and would return to Vaikuntha on the Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla. This is the reason why God remains in Yoga Nidra for four months.
