Sivasagar (Assam): Sivasagar city of Assam is in the grip of severe floods. Due to rise in the water level of rivers, a large part of the city has been submerged in water. Local people say that houses and shops have been heavily damaged, there is a shortage of food items and drinking water and there is no electricity.
Shops and houses, water everywhere
Pritam Borua, a local businessman, told ANI that almost the entire city is affected by flood waters. Water has entered the shops, causing huge damage.
Everything was destroyed in the deluge.
- Borua said, “Flood water has completely submerged Sivasagar. Not a single ward is left dry. Only two wards are safe to some extent, but water has entered everything else. Talking of shops, they have all been ruined. Not a single shop in the city or any ward has survived. Everyone has suffered huge losses. Most of the shops have 2 to 3 feet of water, and some have even reached 5 feet. The condition of the entire city is very bad. It’s serious.”
- Another resident Deepak Kumar said that due to the continuous rise in the water level, people are facing shortage of food and water, especially the problems for children have increased.
Household food got washed away in water
- He said, “We are facing a lot of difficulties since yesterday. There is a huge problem of food, especially for small children. The water has not decreased at all, but is continuously increasing. Water is flowing like a river on the roads. People’s houses have either been washed away or drowned, and everyone has moved to higher ground. All our belongings have been destroyed.”
- Ration shop owner Sushil Aggarwal said that his shop has been completely submerged in the flood, due to which all the ration kept there has got spoiled.
People told painful stories of nature’s havoc
- Aggarwal said, “My ration shop is completely under water. There is about 4 to 5 feet of water inside. All the ration goods have been damaged by drowning. We are also facing problems in commuting from our homes. Electricity has been cut and there is a severe shortage of drinking water. This is not just my story, more than a hundred shopkeepers have been badly affected in Station Chariyali area alone.”
- Shop owner Taj Hussain said that the flood has ruined his mobile repairing business and described the situation as unprecedented.
- Hussain said, “We spent a lot of time in keeping the goods at high places, but still there was a lot of damage. I have a mobile repairing shop and many phones of customers who had come for repair got damaged in the water. I have been living in Sivasagar for 25 to 30 years, but I have never seen such a flood. Usually river water comes, but this is the first time I have seen such a scene. This devastation happened due to the breach of the embankment of the Desang river. Is.”
- Vinod Thakur, another local resident, said Ward No. 11 was one of the worst-affected areas. Here flood water has entered houses, forcing residents to move to safer places.
- Thakur said, “The condition of Ward No. 11 is the worst. The water started rising yesterday and is rising even today. It has entered every house, waist-deep in many places and chest-deep in some places. People have taken shelter in Milan Mandir and Shyam Mandir. I have been living here for 40 years, and even 65 or 70-year-olds say that they have seen water like this on the streets of Sivasagar.” Flowing like a river never seen before.” (ANI)
