New Delhi: Repolling in parts of West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of nearly 90 per cent on Friday across 15 polling stations in two Assembly constituencies, officials said.
The fresh polling took place in 11 booths in Magrahat Paschim and four in Diamond Harbour after the Election Commission of India ordered a repoll after complaints of irregularities in the earlier phase.
Voting started at 7 am and continued till 6 pm under strict security arrangements. Officials said the process remained largely smooth despite high political stakes.
High turnout amid tight security
Authorities deployed security personnel at all polling stations to ensure peaceful voting. The repoll attracted significant voter participation, pushing turnout close to 90 per cent.
The constituencies had earlier voted in the second phase of the state elections held on April 29. The overall Assembly elections were conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29.
Fresh complaints from Falta
The Election Commission said it received reports from observers about multiple issues during polling in Falta Assembly constituency. Officials said a decision will be taken on Friday night on whether repolling is needed in more booths a day before counting.
Tension surfaced in South 24 Parganas district, especially in Falta, where residents protested over alleged threats by workers of the Trinamool Congress. Police officer Shantanu Sen said the situation remained “peaceful” despite protests. He asked residents to file formal complaints at the police station and assured action based on verified allegations.
Political war of words intensifies
Political rhetoric has increased ahead of counting day. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rejected exit poll predictions and claimed they were attempts to “manipulate the stock market.” She said similar patterns were seen in earlier elections.
TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of using central forces to intimidate voters. He alleged that women were targeted and said a section of the media was supporting such narratives.
Voting for the West Bengal elections was held in two phases. Counting of votes for the Assembly elections will take place on May 4.
