Commonwealth Games The 23rd edition of the IPL is going to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, where India will be expected to bring maximum medals from its 125 players. The Commonwealth Games started in 1930. Whereas India participated for the first time in the second edition held in 1934. India had won only 1 medal in the 1934 event. The journey that started with that one medal has reached 564 medals by the last Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham in 2022.
Indian players did not win any medals twice in CWG
The 23rd Commonwealth Games is definitely going to be held in Glasgow, but before this India has participated only in its 18 editions. In those 18 editions, it happened twice when India had to return empty handed from the Commonwealth Games without a medal. India did not win a single medal in the Sydney 1938 and Vancouver Commonwealth Games held in 1954. That means, in the first 3 Commonwealth Games that India participated in, it got only 1 medal. He won this medal as a bronze medal in the 1934 London Commonwealth Games.
Got wings from 1958 CWG, then medals kept increasing
In the Commonwealth Games held in Cardiff in 1958, India improved its position and won 3 medals, which included 2 gold and 1 silver. After this it seemed as if it was the same. In the next Commonwealth Games, Team India’s position started improving in the medal tally.
In the Commonwealth Games held in Kingston in 1966, India touched the double figure for the first time and won 10 medals including 3 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze. In the 1970 Games held in Edinburgh, India won 12 medals, which included 5 gold. India won 15 medals each in the 1974 and 1978 Commonwealth Games. Whereas in the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, this figure increased to 16 medals.
Surprising increase in medal count in 1990 CWG
In the 1990s, the Indian team started writing a different success story in the Commonwealth Games. This was the period when for the first time a big increase was seen in India’s medal tally. India won 32 medals in the 1990 Commonwealth Games, which was directly double the number of medals won in the 1982 Games. In the Commonwealth Games of 1994 and 1998, the medal count came down to 24 and 25, but this was the calm before the storm.
Delhi 2010 was the best CWG for India so far.
India gave its best performance in the next Commonwealth Games held in Manchester in 2002 and won 69 medals including 30 gold. In the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the medal count again dropped to 50. But by winning 101 medals including 38 gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi, India showed that it knows how to bounce back. This is India’s best performance so far in the history of the Commonwealth Games. Before and after this, India neither won that many gold medals nor did its number of medals exceed that number.
India won 64 medals in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow in 2014. This figure increased to 66 in the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast in 2018, which included 26 gold. Whereas in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, India won 61 medals, which included 22 gold.
Won 564 medals including 203 gold in 18 editions of CWG
If we add up the total number of medals won from the only medal won in the 1934 Commonwealth Games till 2022 Birmingham, the total amount is 564 medals. In this, India has won maximum 203 gold. Apart from that there are 190 silver and 171 bronze medals.
