Team India has been announced for a test match and ODI series against Afghanistan. A major change has taken place in the vice-captaincy of the team for the Test match. Putting an end to all the speculations, the selection committee has removed Rishabh Pant from the vice-captaincy and has given this responsibility to KL Rahul in his place. Star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the entire series. Apart from these, a big decision has been taken on veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who is not a part of both the series. There is doubt over Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya playing in the ODI series.
Rahul becomes vice-captain, Ishaan returns to ODI
Team India Selection Committee meeting was held in Guwahati on Tuesday 19th May, after which Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar announced the team in the press conference. But considering his leadership as captain in the IPL and the impact it was having on his batting, this responsibility was taken away from him and experienced opener Rahul has been appointed.
But due to poor form, Pant has been completely dropped from the ODI team after T20. In his place, Ishan Kishan has been rewarded for his excellent performance. Ishan Kishan has returned to the ODI team after two and a half years. His last ODI match came in the World Cup 2023. With this, Sanju Samson’s hopes of returning to ODI have suffered a setback. However, Rishabh Pant is still the number-1 wicketkeeper in the Test team, while Dhruv Jurel is in the squad as his backup. In such a situation, Ishaan will have to wait to return to Test.

Question on Rohit-Hardik’s fitness, Jadeja out of ODI
The selection committee has taken a big decision regarding the ODI series, in which Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have been included. However, the selection committee has made it clear regarding both of them that their playing will depend on their fitness. Both the star players are struggling with fitness problems in IPL 2026. Keeping this in view, this decision has been taken.
On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja has been rested for the Test match starting from June 6. But Agarkar has made it clear that efforts are being made to try new players in place of Jadeja in ODIs and hence he has been kept out of the ODI team. For the first time, Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey and Prince Yadav have been selected in the Test and ODI series teams.
