26/11 Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Rana has demanded a cooler, complaining about the heat and poor hygiene in the jail. A special NIA court in Delhi has directed jail authorities to consider his request as per the jail manual.
New Delhi [भारत]July 16 (ANI): The special NIA court in New Delhi on Thursday asked jail authorities to consider the plea of alleged 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Tahawwur Rana. Rana has requested to provide coolers in view of the scorching heat in the country.
The court gave this direction after Rana approached the court through a letter. He complained about the poor sanitary conditions in his cell, saying it was affecting his health. He also requested the court to issue directions to the jail authorities to provide him a cooler.
Instructions to take decision as per jail manual
After considering the request, Patiala House Court Special Judge Prashant Sharma asked the jail authorities to decide on the requests as per the jail manual. Tahawwur Rana was extradited from the US to India on April 10, 2025 in connection with the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack conspiracy. Currently, he is lodged in Tihar Jail.
Rana wants a lawyer of his choice
Earlier, Tahawwur Rana had given names of some lawyers of his choice to be appointed as his counsel. These names were given to the special NIA court located at Patiala House. The court has asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to contact those lawyers and find out who is ready and willing to represent him.
Earlier, the court had given him a call facility to discuss with his family to appoint a lawyer of his choice. Rana was provided a legal aid counsel (LAC) Piyush Sachdeva to represent him. Rana had expressed his desire to appoint a lawyer of his choice. After this Sachdeva was relieved of duty.
Who is Tahawwur Rana?
Tahawwur Rana is a Pakistani-Canadian businessman and former military doctor with links to the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist organization. He has been involved in several high-profile terrorist plots, notably the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and a failed attempt to target the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in 2009. (ANI)
