The third ODI match between India and England to be played at Lord’s on Sunday could be the last match of Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s international career.
In the last eight ODI innings, 39-year-old Rohit Sharma has scored only 241 runs. During this period, his average has been 30.1 and strike rate has been 88.6, while he has scored only one half-century with his bat.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar is present in Cardiff with the team on this tour. Sources say that the selectors are not considering Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who has won two ICC trophies, as part of their future plans for next year’s ODI World Cup.
A senior BCCI source associated with selection matters told PTI on condition of anonymity, “The national selectors want Yashasvi Jaiswal to be given a longer chance. He has scored two centuries in three innings. There are about 20 ODI matches left before the World Cup and Jaiswal should get an opportunity to play all these matches. ”
The source said, “No one can ask Rohit Sharma to retire, but it is clear that the selectors want to move forward in preparing the team for the future from the home ODI series against West Indies in September. He himself will have to take the final decision regarding Rohit’s future. ”
According to sources, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are unanimous on the issue that Virat Kohli deserves automatic selection in the team due to his current form and fitness, whereas this is not the case with Rohit Sharma.
It is also understood that if Rohit Sharma is retained in the team even after the England tour, then Yashasvi Jaiswal will be deprived of important match experience, which the selectors do not consider appropriate.
It is noteworthy that there was no complete agreement between the selection committee and Rohit Sharma on the issue of his retirement from Test cricket.
Sources close to the selection committee say that they did not want Rohit to take the decision of retirement after playing only two matches in the five-Test series against England. At the same time, people close to Rohit Sharma claim that he never intended to play just two Tests and had made himself available for the entire series.
