PM Modi spoke on phone to Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and expressed condolences on the demise of Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The two leaders resolved to further strengthen the India-Qatar strategic partnership, carrying forward the legacy of Father Amir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani have reiterated their resolve to carry forward the legacy of Father Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and further strengthen the India-Qatar Strategic Partnership and people-to-people ties.

The two leaders spoke on telephone on Thursday, during which Prime Minister Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences on the demise of Father Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Modi remembered Father Amir for his significant contributions as the chief architect of modern Qatar and paid tribute to his visionary leadership.

“The Prime Minister paid tribute to his visionary leadership and recalled his important role in strengthening India-Qatar relations over the years as well as his deep affection for India and the Indian community in Qatar,” the MEA statement said.

The Emir of Qatar thanked Prime Minister Modi for his phone call and expressed his appreciation for the words of support at this difficult time.

“Spoke to the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and expressed his heartfelt condolences on the demise of His Highness Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Recalled his deep affection for India, his warmth towards the Indian community in Qatar and his unwavering commitment to India-Qatar relations. His enduring legacy will continue to guide our two countries as we further strengthen our strategic partnership,” Prime Minister Modi said in a post on Twitter.

The two leaders reaffirmed their resolve to carry forward the legacy of Father Amir and further strengthen bilateral relations. They also agreed to stay in close contact.

The phone call followed a period of national mourning in India, during which the government declared a one-day state mourning on July 13 in honor of the late leader.

Who was Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani?

Prime Minister Modi had earlier described Father Amir as a “visionary leader who has taken Qatar to great levels of development and prosperity” and a “true friend” of India, whom he had the honor of meeting during his visit to Doha in February 2024.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, father of the Emir of Qatar, dies at the age of 74. Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, was a key architect of the energy-rich country’s spectacular growth.

During his reign, the country saw economic, social and cultural development, which strengthened its position in the international community, Al Jazeera reported. According to Al Jazeera, Sheikh Hamad’s tenure also saw the enactment of Qatar’s first permanent constitution in 2004 and the introduction of municipal elections, in which women were allowed to vote and stand as candidates.
