Farmer Chhabi Lal of Dhamtari district has achieved success in vegetable production with the help of watershed development scheme and modern farming. By adopting water conservation and multi-cropping farming, they increased their income and became financially self-reliant.
Raipur. The watershed development projects operated under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana are bringing a big change in the lives of the farmers of Chhattisgarh. Based on rain water conservation and increasing the productivity of land, this scheme is playing an important role in making small and marginal farmers self-reliant. This scheme is proving to be very effective in increasing the income of farmers in rural areas and connecting them with modern farming. Farmer Chhabi Lal, resident of Belaudi village under Magarlod development block of Dhamtari district, has emerged as an inspiring example of this.
Farmers moved from traditional farming to modern vegetable production
Earlier farmers Chhabi Lal were dependent on limited resources and traditional farming. Due to lack of adequate irrigation facilities and lack of knowledge of modern agricultural techniques, their economic condition was not becoming strong. The assistance received from the livelihood item under the Watershed Development Scheme and the guidance of agricultural experts brought a big change in their lives. After this, he started vegetable production in a modern way on his about one and a half acre land.

Today, farmer Chhabi Lal is successfully cultivating vegetables like Barbatti, Ladyfinger, Bitter Gourd, Brinjal and Gilki in his field. He has adopted modern techniques in farming like water conservation, moisture conservation and multi-crop crop rotation. With the help of these technologies, farm productivity has increased significantly and crop quality has also improved.
Farmers’ income increased from vegetable production
Due to the incentive amount received under the scheme and water management works, farmer Chhabi Lal is now getting regular income. They are continuously supplying fresh vegetables to the local markets. Due to increased income from farming, they are now able to meet the needs of their family in a better way. Secretary to the Government of India inspected the farm
Narendra Bhushan, Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development (Department of Land Resources), Government of India, who recently visited Dhamtari, inspected the farm of farmer Chhabi Lal. He appreciated the work being done under the watershed scheme and the success of the farmers. He said that the watershed scheme is not limited to just water and land conservation, but it is becoming an effective medium to strengthen the livelihood of rural families and make farmers economically self-reliant.
