Employees Provident Fund
Many employees change jobs several times during their career and in the process they forget to keep track of their old Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts. To avail this amount, they have to transfer the PF amount from the old account to the new EPF account. Many EPF subscribers faced difficulties in transferring such amounts, especially when they had more than one Universal Account Number (UAN).
However, to ease the problems of EPF subscribers, Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has created a new e-portal. This portal helps members to locate their old, in-operative EPF accounts and transfer or settle the deposited balance to their active UAN. The Labor Ministry gave this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on July 27, 2026.
EPFO’s e-portal for old EPF accounts
Lok Sabha MP VK Srikandan asked whether the government is considering starting an e-portal for ease of identification/tracking of old EPF accounts, UAN linking and activating them.
Answering this question, Minister of State for Labor and Employment Shobha Karandlaje said that EPFO has created a digital platform through which members can safely track their inoperative EPF accounts.
According to the minister, members can authenticate themselves using Aadhaar to access their old PF accounts and either transfer the balance to their active UAN or apply for settlement.
How does EPFO portal work?
- This e-portal uses Aadhaar-based authentication to verify the identity of the member. Once verification is done, eligible members can identify their old PF accounts and initiate the process of transferring funds to their existing UAN. Members can also use the portal to settle eligible old accounts.
- The government believes that this digital process will make it easier for members to link the old PF balance to their active EPF accounts without going through lengthy offline processes.
- Srikandan also asked whether the government will expand the scope of this EPFO e-portal to also include those members who do not remember the identification information of their old account or are unable to access it.
- According to the minister, there is no proposal to include such members who do not remember the old account information. The government clarified that it is not currently considering expanding the scope of the portal to include members who are unable to remember or access the identification information of their old EPF accounts.
Possible benefits of the new EPFO portal
According to the government, this portal is expected to facilitate digital submission of joint declaration for KYC update, provided they are verified. With this, settlement of old, inactive EPF accounts will be done faster, with more transparency and without any hassle. This will reduce manual work (human intervention) and minimize paper work (physical documentation).
