In ancient times, there was a city named Bhadravati on the banks of river Saraswati. A king named Dhritiman ruled there. In the same city there also lived a Vaishya named Dhanpal, who was a very religious person and a devotee of Lord Vishnu. He had five sons, out of which the youngest son Dhrishtabuddhi was extremely wicked and sinful. Dhrishtabuddhi used to insult the gods, Brahmins and his father. Fed up, Dhanpal threw him out of the house.
After leaving the house, Dhrishtabuddhi ran out of money and started wandering from door to door, distraught with hunger and thirst. While wandering, he reached the ashram of sage Kaundinya. At that time it was the month of Vaishakh. Dhrishtabuddhi fell at the feet of the sage and asked for the way to get rid of his sins. The sage advised him to observe a fast on Mohini Ekadashi. Dhrishtabuddhi observed this fast with full devotion, due to which all his sins were destroyed and finally he assumed a divine body and went to Vishnuloka.
