India’s 15-year-old golfer Guntas Kaur Sandhu has finished joint second after the first round in the Malaysia Ladies Amateur Open. Another Indian player Seerat Kang is at sixth position, while in the team event, the Indian team is at third position.
Selangor [मलेशिया]July 29 (ANI): Chandigarh’s Guntas Kaur Sandhu carded an impressive one-over 73 to finish joint second with three other golfers after the opening round of the prestigious Malaysia Ladies Amateur Open here on Tuesday.
According to a release, 15-year-old Guntas is part of a two-member Indian team sent by the Indian Golf Union (IGU), a National Sports Federation (NSF) recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India.
Seerat Kang of Panchkula carded a two-over 74 at the par-72 Glenmarie Golf and Country Club to end her campaign at sixth position on the first day.
Malaysia’s Foong Ji Yu has taken the lead in the initial round by carding one-under 71.
In the team championship, India are in third place with a three-over combined score of 147.
A total of 54 golfers from 11 countries including China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, South Korea, Philippines and Singapore are participating in this event.
Great performance by Guntas
Guntas made three birdies on the ninth, 11th and 16th holes before bogeys on the 10th, 15th, 17th and 18th.
Talking about her round, Guntas said, “The course is in very good condition and I really liked its behavior today. I tried to use all the things I learned on the IGU circuit here in Malaysia and the result has been very positive. There are still two rounds left and I vow to maintain my concentration and focus on the process. A memorable result is expected.”
40th edition of the tournament
The tournament, in its 40th edition, was held at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club, which has a course rating of 72.1 and a slope rating of 122.
Around 40 amateur golfers from 20 countries will compete in this three-round event, in which individual winners will be decided after 54 holes, while the champion team will be decided by the combined score of both the golfers after 36 holes.
Guntas has finished in the top-10 13 times, including four wins, in 20 starts on the IGU Amateur Circuit. The 15-year-old player won the IGU Eastern India Ladies, IGU Southern India Ladies, IGU Maharashtra Ladies and IGU West Bengal Ladies titles in the 2025-26 season. (ANI)
