Adramatic Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 Eliminator on Wednesday night saw a fiery exchange between two of cricket’s biggest stars, Kieron Pollard and Steve Smith, adding extra spice to an already historic encounter.

Kieron Pollard and Steve Smith In Heated Exchange

The Heated Confrontation

The flashpoint occurred during MI New York’s bowling innings as they desperately tried to defend a colossal target set by their batsmen. Washington Freedom’s captain, Steve Smith, who was in sublime form, had already struck two sixes off Kieron Pollard’s bowling in the 14th over. After beating Smith (37, born June 2, 1989) with a slower delivery outside off stump, Pollard (39, born May 12, 1987), visibly frustrated, collected the ball in his follow-through and angrily hurled it back towards the Australian batter.

Smith swiftly ducked out of the way as the ball flew harmlessly over him to the wicketkeeper. An immediate exchange of words ensued between the two veterans. While Smith sported a wry smile, Pollard appeared intensely animated, highlighting the simmering tensions in the crucial knockout fixture.

A Match of Records and High Drama

Despite the brief altercation, Smith remained unfazed, continuing his spectacular innings to lead Washington Freedom to an astonishing victory. MI New York had posted a mammoth 266/9, with captain Nicholas Pooran blasting the fastest century in MLC history – a sensational 100 off just 31 deliveries. Kieron Pollard himself contributed a blistering 64 runs off 25 balls, including eight sixes, and in doing so, became only the second player after Chris Gayle to hit 1000 sixes in T20 cricket.

However, Washington Freedom responded with an even more remarkable batting display. Chasing 267 for victory, they recovered from a precarious 10/2 inside three overs to complete the highest successful run chase in men’s T20 cricket history. Smith remained unbeaten on a masterful 110 runs off just 48 balls, featuring seven fours and nine sixes. He was brilliantly supported by wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous, who scored a breathtaking 132 off 51 deliveries, laced with 10 fours and 12 sixes. The duo forged a sensational 241-run partnership for the third wicket, guiding Washington Freedom to the target of 270/4 in just 18.4 overs and knocking the defending champions, MI New York, out of the tournament.

The Washington Freedom’s remarkable victory sees them advance to the Challenger match, where they will face the San Francisco Unicorns. The winner of that encounter will then take on the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the MLC 2026 Final on July 18.
