Protests have intensified over the proposed $110 billion deal between two big media companies of Hollywood. Entertainment industry employees, small businesses and labor unions demonstrated in Los Angeles against Paramount Skydance’s planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Protesters say the deal could threaten thousands of jobs and impact Hollywood’s creative diversity.
This protest program was organized under the Main Street vs. the Merger campaign. This is a campaign running in three cities, the aim of which is to make people aware about the possible impacts of this mega deal.
Comedian Adam Conover expressed concern
Stand-up comedian and TV host Adam Conover also attended the program. He said that the American entertainment industry is already facing many challenges and the continuous corporate mergers can further weaken its position.
Conover said that Hollywood is not just an industry, but an important part of America’s cultural identity. According to him, if the control of big companies continues to increase, then both creative freedom and employment will be affected.
Even before, jobs were lost after merger.
While sharing his experience, Conover said that his popular show Adam Ruins Everything was closed after the merger of AT&T and Time Warner in 2018. Due to this, a large number of employees and contract workers had lost their jobs.
The protesting employees say that after big media mergers, employees are often laid off to reduce costs. This is why they are worried about this new proposed deal.
Employment in Hollywood is already under pressure
The employment situation in the entertainment industry already remains weak. Thousands of jobs have been lost in California in recent years. Experts believe that due to the decline in TV advertising revenues and the slowing growth of streaming platforms, studios are looking for new ways to reduce expenses.
Apart from this, many production houses are now turning to low-cost areas for the production of films and web series. This has reduced work opportunities for studio and technical staff in Hollywood.
Preparation for legal challenge also
However, Paramount Skydance claims that this merger will benefit the industry and the combined company will maintain the ability to release at least 30 films every year. Despite this, preparations are underway to challenge this deal in court in many states including California and New York.
Experts believe that if this deal reduces competition and affects employment opportunities, regulatory agencies and state governments may try to stop it. This matter may remain a big issue for Hollywood and the American media industry in the coming months.
