CM Yogi-led Gomti Barrage upgrade aims to strengthen Lucknow water supply system

The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated modernization work at the Gomti Barrage as part of efforts to strengthen water management infrastructure and improve drinking water supply in Lucknow.
Officials from the Irrigation Department said the project includes the phased replacement of ageing barrage gates and the introduction of automated monitoring systems.

According to officials, the barrage, constructed between 1980 and 1983, plays a key role in maintaining water levels at the Kudia Ghat pumping station, which supports drinking water supply to large parts of Lucknow. The structure is also used for regulating river flow during the monsoon season to reduce flood risks in the city.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had directed authorities to replace old and corroded gates in phases after concerns were raised over wear caused by prolonged exposure to river water and environmental conditions. Officials said two gates were replaced in 2024, four more in 2025, while work on the remaining gates is currently underway. The new gates have been manufactured at an ISO-certified irrigation workshop in Bareilly using updated engineering designs.

Authorities stated that temporary arrangements, including a cofferdam upstream of the barrage, have been created to ensure uninterrupted water supply during the repair period. A scheduled shutdown between May 8 and June 15 has been planned for repair and installation work, with engineers monitoring operations round the clock.

The Irrigation Department also plans to introduce SCADA-based automation systems at the barrage. Officials said the technology would allow digital operation of gates, real-time monitoring of water levels, and faster response during emergency situations, while reducing dependence on manual operations.
