What is the importance of Devshayani Ekadashi?
Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha is called Devshayani Ekadashi. There is a religious belief that on this day Lord Vishnu goes into yoga nidra on the bed of Sheshnag in Ksheer Sagar. After this, they rest for the next four months and wake up on the Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha i.e. Devuthani Ekadashi. The period of these four months is called Chaturmas. Only after the end of Chaturmas, marriage, house warming, mundan, sacred thread ceremony and other auspicious works start again. According to Drik Panchang, Devshayani Ekadashi in the year 2026 is on 25th July 2026, Saturday.

In ancient times, traveling was difficult and sages used to stay at one place and do penance, chanting and meditation. For this reason, the tradition of postponing marriages and other big ceremonies started during this period. There is also a religious belief that when Lord Vishnu himself is in Yoga Nidra, then new auspicious works are not started. Therefore, marriage, house warming and other auspicious works are done only after Devuthani Ekadashi.

In the month of Ashadha, special importance has been given to the worship of Lord Vishnu, fasting, charity, chanting and recitation of religious texts.
