Upcoming Volkswagen Fortuner Rival SUV Showcased To Dealers In Brazil

Based on the next-generation Amarok platform, Volkswagen’s new seven-seat SUV could challenge Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour

Volkswagen has watched rivals such as Toyota, Ford and Isuzu achieve considerable success with rugged, ladder-frame SUVs derived from pickup trucks. Despite having Amarok in its portfolio, Volkswagen has never offered a production seven-seat SUV based on the pickup.

However, the idea is not entirely new. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles previously developed a one-off seven-seat SUV based on Amarok. It never progressed beyond the prototype stage, although the vehicle reportedly remains within Volkswagen’s internal collection.

Volkswagen is now revisiting the concept as part of its . Internally known as Projeto Atacama, the new seven-seat SUV could become the brand’s locally produced flagship. Reports indicate that it has already been presented to Volkswagen dealers in Brazil.

New Volkswagen SUV – Projeto Atacama

The upcoming SUV and next-generation Amarok will reportedly be developed on the Star Bridge architecture, originating from Volkswagen’s collaboration with SAIC. This platform is already used by the SAIC Maxus Interstellar X pickup in China.

The Interstellar X measures around 5,500 mm in length and has a wheelbase of approximately 3,300 mm. Volkswagen has not confirmed the dimensions of its SUV, but its proportions could be broadly comparable.

If the 3,300 mm wheelbase is retained, the Volkswagen SUV will have a significant dimensional advantage over its primary rivals. Toyota SW4, known as Fortuner in several markets, has a wheelbase of 2,790 mm. GWM Haval H9 has a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.

This means the new Volkswagen could have a wheelbase around 40–50 cm longer than its closest competitors. Such dimensions should allow Volkswagen to offer more cabin space, improved third-row legroom and a larger luggage area. However, an SUV body may require different proportions from the Interstellar X pickup. Final dimensions and seating specifications will become clear closer to its official unveiling.

Not A Rebadged SAIC Maxus

Although Volkswagen will utilise the Star Bridge architecture, its new SUV is not expected to be a badge-engineered version of the Maxus Interstellar X. Volkswagen is likely to introduce a distinctive exterior design, unique interior and model-specific chassis tuning. The suspension will also have to be recalibrated to balance off-road capability with the ride comfort expected from a family-focused seven-seat SUV.

The production model could share components with the next-generation Amarok, helping Volkswagen reduce development and manufacturing costs. This relationship should also give the SUV the towing, payload and rough-road capabilities generally associated with ladder-frame vehicles.

Plug-In Hybrid Could Produce 800 Nm

The most significant differentiator could be the powertrain. Higher variants of the SUV are expected to receive a high-performance plug-in-hybrid system related to the one being developed for the next-generation Amarok.

Reports have referred to a potential Amarok 800 TSI variant, with the number indicating torque output of around 800 Nm. Combined power output could exceed 470 hp, with four-wheel drive offered as standard. The electrified pickup could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately five seconds.

A related version of this powertrain could be offered with Projeto Atacama. If these figures reach production, Volkswagen’s SUV would have a substantial performance advantage over its diesel-powered rivals. Toyota Fortuner uses a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine producing 204 hp and 500 Nm. GWM Haval H9 is available with a 2.4-litre turbodiesel generating approximately 184 hp and 480 Nm.

With more than 470 hp and around 800 Nm, Volkswagen’s upcoming model could emerge as one of Brazil’s most powerful off-road-capable seven-seat SUVs. An electric motor should also provide immediate low-speed torque, which could benefit towing and off-road driving.

Volkswagen’s New South American Flagship

Volkswagen has been working on several new products to strengthen its position in Brazil and other Latin American markets. These include the recently revealed Tukan compact pickup, next-generation Amarok and the new Projeto Atacama SUV. The large SUV will primarily challenge Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour (Everest) and GWM Haval H9. Depending on its positioning and price, it could also attract buyers considering more expensive premium seven-seat SUVs.

Volkswagen has not officially revealed the production design, specifications or launch timeline. However, the reported dealer presentation suggests that development has progressed beyond an early feasibility study.
