Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will visit Japan from August 24 to 27, leading India’s largest-ever business delegation to the country as India seeks to deepen trade and investment ties with Japan.
The four-day visit will cover Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, with more than 200 business representatives accompanying the minister. The delegation will include representatives from manufacturing, semiconductors, clean energy, steel, automotive, financial services, healthcare and start-ups, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The ministry said the visit reflects the ambition of India and Japan’s Special Strategic and Global Partnership and comes at a time when both countries are looking to significantly deepen trade and investment ties.
Piyush Goyal’s Japan visit: What is on the agenda
Goyal’s first stop will be Tokyo, where he is scheduled to hold meetings with senior executives of major Japanese industrial conglomerates and companies with longstanding business interests in India.
He will also participate in a round-table with Keidanren, the Japan Business Federation, which represents more than 1,500 Japanese enterprises.
Discussions in Tokyo will focus on emerging areas including semiconductors, artificial intelligence and start-ups. Goyal is also scheduled to engage with foreign institutional investors.
The minister will hold bilateral discussions with Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Akazawa Ryosei. He will also call on senior members of the Japanese Government and Parliament and interact with the Indian community in Japan.
Tokyo meetings to focus on trade, investment and technology
The Tokyo leg of the visit will bring together government and business leaders to discuss opportunities for greater economic cooperation.
The focus on semiconductors, artificial intelligence and start-ups comes alongside broader discussions with Japanese companies and investors on India’s manufacturing and investment opportunities.
The engagements are expected to provide a platform for Indian and Japanese businesses to explore potential partnerships across established and emerging sectors.
Nagoya roadshow to focus on manufacturing
The delegation will then travel to Nagoya, a major industrial centre in central Japan.
Goyal will lead a business roadshow organised with the Central Japan Economic Federation, known as Chukeiren, and the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The minister is also scheduled to engage with the leadership of Aichi Prefecture and major manufacturing investors from the automotive and steel sectors.
These meetings will focus on strengthening industrial cooperation and highlighting opportunities for Japanese companies in India’s manufacturing sector.
Osaka to host investor and business roadshow
The final leg of Goyal’s visit will be in Osaka, where he will participate in an Investors and Business Roadshow.
He will also meet leading Japanese companies from the electronics, industrial and consumer sectors. The engagements will showcase opportunities across India’s manufacturing, clean energy and consumer markets.
The Osaka meetings will form part of the broader effort to connect Japanese businesses and investors with opportunities in India.
India-Japan trade and investment push
Japan is a key long-term partner for India in technology, industrial cooperation and capital inflows, particularly in areas including infrastructure, steel and automotive manufacturing.
The more than 200-member business delegation brings together companies and representatives from a wide range of sectors, providing a platform for discussions on trade, investment and industrial partnerships.
The Commerce Ministry said the visit is expected to give fresh momentum to bilateral trade and investment ties and open new avenues of cooperation in high-technology manufacturing and next-generation industries.
These areas are also linked to India’s broader economic priorities under Atmanirbhar Bharat and the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.
