US tariff bomb on 5 countries including India and China
Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026: The US Senate has passed a bill imposing new and tougher sanctions on Russia. Under this, five countries including India (India, China, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan) But 100% tariff may be imposed. This bill was prepared by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. It was passed on Tuesday, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in America’s Capitol Hill.
The purpose of this bill is to increase economic pressure on Russia, so that it stops its attack on Ukraine. In the voting to pass the bill, 86 senators voted in favor and 12 against. This law has a provision to impose sanctions on Russian officials and impose heavy tariffs on the five countries mentioned above, so that these countries reduce their dependence on Russian oil and gas.
Regarding this bill to be introduced in April 2025, Senator Lindsey Graham had told earlier this year that despite the ongoing trade tension between America and India, President Donald Trump has approved it. This bill has been brought at a time when the movement of ships in Hormuz has been disrupted due to the ongoing war in West Asia.
Russia’s economic blockade
This has increased India’s dependence on Russian oil and gas. Due to the Iran-America war, crude oil coming from Gulf countries has completely stopped. This oil earlier accounted for about 40% of India’s total oil imports. Now Indian oil refining companies have had to make Russian crude oil the main option. Senator Richard Blumenthal had earlier said that if a country buys very little gas from Russia, i.e. less than 15 percent of Russia’s total gas exports, then it can be exempted under this bill.
How much tariff is there on these countries now?
If we talk about the present time, American tariff of 10 percent is currently applicable on India. At the same time, China has been kept in the 12.5 percent tariff slab. Apart from this, separate duties ranging from 7.5% to 25% are also effective on some goods from China. At the same time, American tariffs between 10 to 12.5% are also applicable on countries like Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan. After the bill passed in the US Senate, now 100 percent tariff can be imposed on these five countries. These five countries are importing crude oil and gas from Russia on a large scale.
