America is the biggest obstacle to Palestine’s membership in UN: Ambassador Abdullah Shawesh. Us Is The Main Obstacle To Palestine Full Un Membership Says Envoy

Palestinian Ambassador to India Abdullah M Abu Shawesh has alleged that Palestine is not getting full membership of the UN due to America’s opposition in the UN Security Council. He said that Washington is repeatedly stopping this process.

New Delhi [भारत]July 15 (ANI): Palestinian Ambassador to India Abdullah M Abu Shawesh has said that the biggest obstacle for Palestine in becoming a full member of the United Nations is the United States. He argued that Washington has blocked the process in the UN Security Council despite widespread international support.

America’s biggest obstacle: Palestinian ambassador

Speaking to ANI, Abu Shawesh said that the process of attaining full membership of the UN involves three stages, of which Palestine has completed the first stage and does not see any difficulties in the third. He said, “To obtain full recognition as a member state in the United Nations, you have to go through three steps. The first step is to submit the request to the Secretary-General himself, and we have already gone through this step.”

He said the second step requires the UN Security Council to recommend Palestine’s admission to the UN General Assembly, which will then make the final decision. Abu Shawesh said, “The next step is to go through the Security Council, and the Security Council should give a recommendation to the General Assembly, and in the General Assembly we will be accepted. So in the first and third steps, we have no problem with them.”

However, he alleged that the process has been repeatedly blocked by the United States in the Security Council. “The second step, unfortunately, because of our experience, has been blocked by the United States itself, and the main obstacle to this step is the United States, which is fully supporting the Israeli occupation,” the Palestinian envoy said.

India supported Palestine’s claim

Earlier, on Monday (local time), reaffirming its traditional foreign policy stance, India supported Palestine’s bid for full membership of the United Nations and reiterated its commitment towards a negotiated solution to the long-running conflict in the region. New Delhi’s diplomatic position was expressed by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary Sripriya Ranganathan during a ministerial meeting of the Palestine Donor Group held in Brussels.

This high-level session brought together representatives of the European Union, its Member States, Palestine, international partners and financial organizations to discuss financial support for the Palestinian Authority and the delivery of humanitarian assistance to its citizens.

At the forum, Ranganathan emphasized that India has been a long-standing partner of the Palestinian people and reaffirmed India’s continued support for the “two-state” solution as well as Palestine’s membership of the United Nations.

Highlighting India’s constructive role, the Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi is supporting the vision of a “two-state” solution with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security within recognized borders, in accordance with international law.

Demonstrating this enduring commitment, the MEA Secretary detailed India’s strong developmental footprint in the region, highlighting the ongoing capacity-building programs and humanitarian assistance provided to the Palestinian population. He said India’s projects are demand-driven and largely focus on healthcare, education, capacity building and vocational training.

Additionally, the Ministry of External Affairs said India is currently engaged in major projects in healthcare, women empowerment and institution-building in Palestine. Expanding on this active support, during the Brussels meeting, the Secretary announced several new projects focused on rehabilitation, healthcare, education and vocational training to further assist the Palestinian people.
