New Delhi: Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Saturday convicted BJP MLA Raju Kumar Singh from Sahibganj, Bihar in an old case. The court ordered him to be taken into custody as soon as he was found guilty of culpable homicide and under the Arms Act. However, the court has acquitted his wife and two other accused of all charges.

Big things about MP-MLA court’s decision?
- Special Judge (MP-MLA) Vishal Gogane has convicted Raju Kumar Singh of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (section 304 Part 2 of IPC) and section 30 of the Arms Act.
- The court has acquitted Raju Singh’s wife Renu Singh, Rana Rajesh Singh and Ramendra Singh of all charges. Now there will be a debate on Raju Singh’s sentence on June 9. A detailed copy of the court’s decision is yet to come.
- Earlier, on October 30, 2023, the court had rejected the plea of the accused and framed charges against them. The court had said that prima facie there is enough evidence to file a case against Raju Singh for culpable homicide and under the Arms Act. At the same time, charges of destruction of evidence (Section 201/34) and Renu Singh of destruction of evidence (Section 201) were framed against Ramendra Singh and Rana Rajesh Singh.
What was the whole matter?
- According to complainant Vikas Gupta, on the night of December 31, 2018, he had gone to the New Year party with his wife Archana Gupta and daughter. This party was at the farm house of his 25 year old friend Sanjeev Singh, which is in Ambedkar Colony, Mandi village, Delhi.
- Vikas had told that at around 12 o’clock in the night, his wife hugged him and then went back to the DJ floor to dance. At the same time, he saw his friend Sanjeev’s brother Raju Singh and his driver Hari Singh firing in the air from their guns.
- He further said that after about 5 minutes, Raju Singh fired again, and soon after he saw his wife falling on the ground. When he ran towards her, he saw that Archana was unconscious and there was blood on her face. After this, with the help of other guests, he was taken to the hospital.
What came to light in the police investigation?
- When the police got the news of firing in the party, they reached the spot. Investigation revealed that the blood at the scene had also been cleaned.
- During investigation, two used cartridges of .22 caliber were recovered from the spot. Some live and used cartridges were also recovered from Raju Singh’s house. A .315 caliber rifle and some cartridges were recovered from the house of driver Hari Singh (who is now dead).
- Investigation revealed that two people had opened fire at the party – one was Raju Singh, who was a former MLA from Bihar at that time, and the other was his driver Hari Singh. Both had fled from the spot. He was arrested from Fazil Nagar in Uttar Pradesh on January 2, 2019. A .22 caliber pistol and some live cartridges were recovered from the possession of Raju Singh.
- On January 3, 2019, police received information that injured Archana Gupta had died during treatment. Subsequently, attempt to murder (Section 307) in the FIR was changed to murder (Section 302). In the postmortem conducted at AIIMS hospital, doctors said the cause of death was bullet injury to the head.
