The 41st Delhi State Shooting Championship started on Sunday at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in the country’s capital Delhi. This competition was to start on Saturday, but due to the death of Jaspal Rana, chairman of Delhi State Rifle Association (DSRA), renowned shooter and hyperperformance coach of the Indian pistol shooting team, it was postponed by a day.
Before the start of the match, all the shooters and range officers present at the shooting range observed silence for two minutes and paid emotional tribute to the great Jaspal Rana.
Big shock for the sports world
Delhi State Rifle Association Vice Chairman Jaspal Singh Marwah said that the hearts of all of us are very heavy at this time, Jaspal Rana was our strength, his departure is a big shock for the sports world, and a big shock for us. Jaspal Rana made a lot of efforts to raise the standard of shooting in Delhi. His dream was that the shooters of Delhi should perform well and bring glory to the country in the world.
Marwah told that usually this competition is held in July-August, but this time there is maintenance work to be done in Dr. Karni Singh Range, due to which it is being held in June. Our Chairman Jaspal Rana was also present during the last Governing Body meeting, it was with his consent that the decision to hold this match in the month of June was taken.
Tribute to Jaspal Rana
Before the start of the match, when tribute was paid to Jaspal Rana, many international shooters and coaches of the Indian team were also present at the shooting range, everyone was emotional and had moist eyes. On this occasion, his fellow international shooter and Indian team coach Gangadhar Sharma said that Jaspal Rana was a great player, a great coach and a great mentor. Perhaps many people do not know that his achievement has been above the world record in many competitions. He made a world record in the center fire event and also in the standard pistol.
49 why would I hit 50
Recalling an incident, Gangadhar Sharma said that once there was a selection trial in Delhi, all the good shooters were participating in the 25 meter event, I was also there. Arjun Awardee shooter Ashok Pandit told Jaspal that if the last series is 49 then the word will be recorded. Jaspal said why would I hit 50 rather than 49? Luck also supported him and Jaspal hit all five shots ‘X Ten’, i.e. one point above the world record. Such players are born very rarely.
Everything is incomplete without Jaspal
DSRA Joint Secretary Ishwinder Jeet Singh said that for many years, this biggest shooting competition of Delhi has been taking place under the patronage and guidance of Jaspal Rana ji, without him everything seems incomplete. The hearts of all our players, coaches and officials are heavy. But this time there have been record entries in the Delhi State Championship, more than 1500 shooters from Delhi are participating in rifle, pistol and shotgun events. This competition will run till June 19.
