Uttar Pradesh’s oldest MLA Alam Badi has passed away. Alam Badi Azmi, former MLA of Samajwadi Party, was 92 years old. He has been MLA from Nizamabad seat of Azamgarh district 5 times. There has been a wave of mourning in Uttar Pradesh due to his death. On the death of an MLA, the question arises whether his pension ends or his family continues to get financial assistance? It is usually given to the person whose name is registered as a nominee. Pension is given only to the nominee registered in the documents. After death, pension can be given to the MLA’s wife/husband, or any child. In case of death of a former MLA, there is a provision to give a pension of only Rs 10,000 to the dependent.

The simple answer is that the amount of pension depends on how many times the person has been elected as MLA. If a person is elected as MLA even just once, he gets the right to get pension for life. Every time he wins an election and becomes an MLA, this pension also increases with each tenure.
If we understand the case of Uttar Pradesh, in many reports it has been claimed that former MLAs get a pension of Rs 25 thousand every month. Not only this, the MLA gets Rs 2000 as additional pension every year after completing 5 years. This amount is also added to his pension and the total becomes Rs 35 thousand.

How does pension increase according to tenure?
The amount of pension is directly related to the tenure of the MLA. That is, if we add the amount of Rs 2 thousand, then if an MLA remains an MLA for 15 years, then he can get a pension of up to Rs 45 thousand. That means, the more times one is elected, the higher the pension. In this way, the pension of the former MLA depends on his tenure.
