Lord Shiva created the mountain

This sacred lake named Manimahesh is at an altitude of about 13,500 feet above sea level. Mount Kailash is situated in its eastern direction. It is believed so. According to local beliefs, after marrying Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva created this mountain named Manimahesh. The height of this peak is about 18,564 feet above sea level. In the morning, a light comes on the peak of Manimahesh mountain and it is visible in the lake formed here.

The falling of this light in the lake is considered to be a symbol of the fact that Bholenath has come to Kailash to sit on his throne. It is believed that this supernatural light is from the gem of Sheshnag. A huge crowd of devotees gather here to see this divine sight. According to Hindu religious texts, Mount Kailash surrounded by Dhauladhar, Pangi and Zanskar ranges of the Himalayas is famous by the name of Manimahesh-Kailash.

Puja takes place around the lake

On reaching Gaurikund here, the first sight of Kailash peak is seen. Gaurikund is considered to be the bathing place of Mother Gauri. Traveling women take bath here. From here there is a straight climb of about one and a half kilometer, after climbing which the devotees reach Manimahesh Lake. This lake is surrounded by mountains on all sides and the view here is very charming. Devotees offer water and worship to the Shiva statues and places of worship around the lake.
