What is Deep Vein Thrombosis and what are the symptoms?
DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) is a serious condition caused by blood clots in the deep veins of the body, especially in the legs. This happens when blood flow in the veins slows or stops, causing swelling, severe pain, and redness in the leg. This requires immediate treatment because the clot can break loose and travel to the lungs, called pulmonary embolism (PE), which can be life-threatening.
Main symptoms of DVT
- Swelling in foot: Sudden swelling, usually in the same leg (shin or thigh).
- Pain or cramps: Pain in the leg, especially when walking or standing.
- Change in skin color: The affected area appears red or purple.
- Feeling hot: The affected area of skin feels warmer than the surrounding skin.
