  • Earlier today, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had confirmed that Vinesh Phogat will participate in the selection trials for the 53 kg category for the Asian Games 2026.

  • “The weigh-ins for all weight categories, including the women’s 53 kg category, were conducted as per the schedule at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. All eligible wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, reported for weigh-ins and completed the required procedure,” the WFI said in a statement.
  • The statement further said, “Accordingly, all eligible wrestlers who have fulfilled the prescribed conditions have been approved to participate in the selection trials, which will begin soon.”
  • Vinesh Phogat weighed 53.9 kg and was placed in the 53 kg draw.

As per the directions of the Delhi High Court, Aditi Chauhan of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and M.M. Somaiya of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) were present as observers during these trials. WFI President Sanjay Singh was also present there.

Supreme Court gave approval to Vinesh Phogat after the ban

  • WFI had also gone to the Supreme Court against the High Court order. However, the Supreme Court on Friday gave interim relief to Phogat and allowed him to participate in the trials. The court has also sought Vinesh’s reply on WFI’s petition. The next hearing of the case is scheduled for Monday, June 1.
  • Delhi High Court had directed in its order on May 22 that Phogat should be allowed to participate in the selection trials to be held on May 30 and 31.
  • The High Court had also ordered that the trials be video-recorded to ensure transparency in the selection process and be conducted under the supervision of independent observers appointed by SAI and IOA.
  • These instructions were issued by the bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia while hearing an appeal by Phogat. (ANI)
