US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that India and America may soon reach a position to finalize an important trade deal. He said that this agreement will be beneficial for both the countries and will also be sustainable in the long run. Rubio made this statement after extensive talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi. Issues like trade, energy, defence, critical minerals and strategic partnership were discussed between the two leaders.
This visit of Rubio to India is taking place at a time when in the last one year there was some tension in the relations between the two countries regarding America’s tariff and trade policy. It is believed that this visit is part of an effort to give a new direction to bilateral relations. In the joint press briefing, Rubio said that there has been tremendous progress in the talks between the two countries. He expressed confidence that soon such a trade agreement will emerge which will advance the national interests of both the countries. Rubio made it clear that the Trump administration’s trade policy is not to target any one country. He said that America wants to rebalance its trade system so that the American economy can benefit in the long run.
Very soon the delegation will come to India
He said that this is not against India. America is trying to balance its trade relations with many countries of the world in a new way. The US Secretary of State also said that an American trade delegation will visit India very soon, so that talks can be taken forward on the proposed trade deal. This clearly indicates that the process regarding trade agreement between the two countries has accelerated.
Describing India as a big and important trading partner of America, Rubio said that it is very important to build a balanced and strong trade relationship with a huge economy like India. He said that America wants there to be such trade agreements across the world which provide equal benefits to both the parties. The possible trade deal between India and America is being considered a big step for the economic relations between the two countries. Experts believe that if this agreement is reached, new opportunities for trade, investment and strategic cooperation can open up.
