The Indian cricket team created history under Shubman Gill’s leadership as they won their one-off Test match of the year by a thumping margin of an innings and 300 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.
The game finished on the third day of play on Monday (June 8) as the hosts dominated from start to finish.
Gill won the toss and chose to bat on the opening day. The home side posted a huge total of 564-8 before declaring the innings. KL Rahul (100) and Shubman Gill (126) scored centuries, while Rishabh Pant (81) and Washington Sundar (51) scored half-centuries. Later, Afghanistan was bowled out for just 152 in the first innings, with debutant Manav Suthar taking a six-wicket haul.
India decided to enforce the follow-on and completed the match in just 35.5 overs by dismissing the visitors for just 112 runs. Sundar took a four-wicket haul while Kuldeep Yadav got three wickets.

The result marks India’s biggest-ever Test victory by an innings in history and the first instance of them winning a game with a margin of an innings and 300 runs. The previous record was set under Virat Kohli’s leadership in 2018 against West Indies.

Meanwhile, this is also the heaviest Test defeat for Afghanistan in history. The Indian team has broken their own world record. The Afghans have lost a Test match by an innings for only the third time in their history, which includes both the times they have played India in the longest format.

Meanwhile, India is the only 10th team in Test cricket’s 149-year-old history to win a Test by an innings and 300 runs and only the fourth team in the 21st century to win a match by this margin. In fact, today’s results are the biggest victory in the longest format of the game in 14 years. The last team to win a Test by a larger margin than Gill’s men today was in 2012.
Today’s result is the second-biggest victory in a Test on Indian soil and the largest in 66 years. Only the West Indies’ victory by an innings and 336 runs against the Indian team at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This is also the second-biggest win by an Asian team in Test cricket history, behind Pakistan’s win by an innings and 324 runs at Lahore in 2002 against New Zealand.
The two teams will now play each other in an ODI series from Saturday (June 13). This will be the first time the two teams a play a bilateral series in the 50-over format.
