Commonwealth Games 2026: India’s athletics hopes suffered a big blow on the very first day of the Commonwealth Games 2026. In the men’s 100 meters event, national record holder Gurindervir Singh could not qualify for the semi-finals. Gurinderveer, who recently gave new hope to Indian sprinting by setting a national record of 10.09 seconds, failed to repeat his rhythm this time. His performance certainly disappointed the Indian fans, but it also showed how important every second is in world-class competitions.
Finished second in heat, still out
25-year-old Gurinderveer Singh finished second in Heat-4 with a timing of 10.39 seconds. In this heat, Rohan Watson of Jamaica stood first with 10.13 seconds. Although Gurindervir finished second in his heat, his overall performance in all 11 heats was not enough to make it to the top-17. He fell 0.15 seconds short of the required qualification mark of 10.24 seconds.

Medal hopes had increased after the record
Gurinderveer had created a new national record by clocking 10.09 seconds in the Federation Cup held in Ranchi in May 2026. He became the first Indian male sprinter to break the barrier of 10.10 seconds. After this brilliant performance, his hopes for a medal in the Commonwealth Games had increased, but he could not perform as expected in his debut match.
Focus will remain on future challenges
Although this result is disappointing for Indian athletics, considering Gurinderveer’s age and recent performance, there is hope for a better comeback in the future. The national record is still in his name and he will be looking for a chance to prove his mettle again in the upcoming international tournaments.
