India Test captain Shubman Gill has made his return to the red-ball team for the one-off game against Afghanistan. The right-handed batter missed India’s previous Test against South Africa in 2025. Gill will have a new deputy as the selectors have removed Rishabh Pant from vice-captaincy. KL Rahul will now assist him in Test cricket. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the complete series against Afghanistan.
The selectors have handed maiden Test call-ups to Manav Suthar, Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been rested for the one-off Test. He isn’t part of the ODI team either. Speaking to the press, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that he remains India’s first-choice spinner in .
Manav is a spin-bowling all-rounder who plays for Rajasthan in domestic cricket. He has already played for India A and has also been part of the Rest of India squad. He has played four matches for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026.
Gurnoor is a right-arm pacer from Punjab, who has also represented India A. He has 52 wickets in only 18 first-class matches. He has only played one IPL game for Punjab Kings in 2023.
Harsh is a spin-bowling all-rounder from Vidarbha. He has 133 wickets in only 27 first-class matches. Harsh has also scored 1026 runs, which includes nine half-centuries.

Dhruv Jurel retain his spot in the Test team, along with Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Washington Sundar. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna will jointly spearhead the pace attack. Nitish Kumar Reddy is all but confirmed to play as the pace-bowling all-rounder.
The one-off Test between India and Afghanistan will be played from June 6 to 10 in Mullanpur. Afghanistan made their Test debut against India in 2018 in Bengaluru. The home team completed the win in just two days.
