Shane van Gisbergen Aims for Oval Mastery After Road Course Success in NASCAR

Shane van Gisbergen, who recently celebrated his 37th birthday, continues to showcase his dominance in the NASCAR Cup Series, securing a second consecutive victory on a road course at Watkins Glen International.

During the race, van Gisbergen executed an impressive comeback, recovering from a setback to clinch his seventh career Cup win, which ties him with Chase Elliott for the most road and street-course wins among active drivers.

Remarkable Comeback at Watkins Glen

After losing the lead with 24 laps remaining, van Gisbergen managed to regain 23 positions and cut down nearly 30 seconds in just 17 laps. This performance is being hailed as one of his most remarkable drives to date.

Trackhouse Racing founder Justin Marks praised van Gisbergen, stating, “We have a race car driver that is at a level that I don’t think this sport has ever seen before on these road courses.” Marks noted that van Gisbergen’s success began with his Cup debut, where he became the first driver to win in his first race in 60 years.

Challenges Ahead on Oval Tracks

With the victory at Watkins Glen, van Gisbergen advanced to the 16th and final provisional spot in the NASCAR Chase, leading Chase Briscoe by six points and Joey Logano by 38 points. However, he is not yet guaranteed a spot in the championship run due to changes in the playoff format this season.

In the new format, van Gisbergen will need to consistently earn points through solid finishes in his second full year in NASCAR. He expressed his determination to secure his place, stating, “I really want to earn my way in this year, and that’s what you have to do.”

Team Dynamics and Future Goals

Trackhouse Racing faces challenges as teammates Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch currently sit outside the Chase standings. Marks acknowledged the team’s need for improvement, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing performance.

As van Gisbergen prepares for the remaining 14 races of the regular season, he faces 12 oval tracks alongside a road course in Sonoma and a street course in San Diego. He remains optimistic, believing that if he can replicate his early-season performance, he can secure a return to the Chase.

Project 91 and Future Opportunities

Marks also discussed the Project 91 initiative, which seeks to provide international racing stars with opportunities in NASCAR. While the project has been on hiatus, Marks reassured fans that it is not entirely finished, hinting at future plans.

Contract Extension for Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

In related news, Hyak Motorsports has announced a multiyear contract extension for Ricky Stenhouse Jr., the 2023 Daytona 500 winner, solidifying his position with the team since 2020.

Team owner Gordon Smith remarked, “Ricky has been a huge part of what we’re building at Hyak Motorsports, and we’re proud to continue this partnership for years to come.”
