Violence broke out in Baruipur, West Bengal after the dead body of a 9 year old girl was found. A 26-year-old youth was beaten to death by an angry mob on suspicion of rape and murder. Police are investigating both the cases of the girl’s death and lynching.
Kolkata: A heart-wrenching incident has taken place in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Here, after the body of a missing 9-year-old girl was found in a pond, an angry mob thrashed a 26-year-old youth to death. The crowd suspected that the young man was involved in the rape and murder of the girl. The girl’s family alleged that she was brutally tortured and killed. After this allegation the local people got enraged and came out on the streets. They caught a 26-year-old youth named Indrajit Tanti, who was suspected to have been seen with the girl’s kidnappers. The angry mob beat him so much that he died. After this incident, the law and order situation deteriorated in the entire area.
Initially, the angry mob refused to hand over the girl’s body to the police. They blocked the road with the dead body, causing traffic to stop. The mob also set fire to many vehicles. The road remained blocked for about five hours and trains were also stopped for an hour. The protesters alleged that local BJP leader Shantanu Mondal was protecting the three main accused in the case, after which the uproar increased further. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, the Chief Minister himself intervened. Only after his assurance, the crowd calmed down and allowed the girl’s body to be taken to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for postmortem. The police have started separate investigations into both the cases of the girl’s death and the subsequent lynching of the youth.
According to the information, the 9-year-old girl had gone to her friend’s house on Saturday evening, but did not return. The family members searched for him the whole night, but on Sunday morning his body was found in a pond. Now political rhetoric has also started regarding this incident. The opposition has targeted the government over law and order, while the ruling party has assured that the culprits will not be spared.
