Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed his desire for Cody Gakpo to remain with the club. Recent reports have linked Gakpo with a move to Manchester City, but van Dijk believes he is a crucial player for Liverpool.
Van Dijk stated that Gakpo is not only an outstanding player but also a friend, as they both play together in the Netherlands national team. After Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, van Dijk was asked about the forward. He said, “What do you think? He is a fantastic player. I believe we should keep our great players with us.”
He further added, “Let’s see what happens in the coming days. I want him to stay here, not just because he is a great player, but also because he is my friend. He is a very important player for us.” Discussions are ongoing regarding Gakpo’s potential transfer to Manchester City, which could mark the end of his journey with Liverpool.
On the other hand, Liverpool is preparing to sign PSG forward Bradley Barcola as a potential replacement. Reports suggest that the club has agreed on a deal worth £123 million, with Barcola scheduled for a medical test on Sunday. Speaking about the French international, van Dijk said that he would be warmly welcomed when he arrives at Anfield. “He is a good player, a fast player. I remember he scored a goal against Chelsea (in last season’s Champions League). If he comes here, he will be welcomed with open arms.”
