Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) [भारत]July 6 (ANI): Yashoda Medicity successfully performed a rare laparoscopic surgery on an 83-year-old male patient, removing around 2,000 stones from his gallbladder. This technically demanding procedure for Calculous Cholecystitis was performed under the leadership of Dr. Pradeep K Dewan, Vice Chairman and Head of the Institute of Minimal Access, Robotic and Bariatric Surgery at Yashoda Medicity. This surgery reflects the hospital’s expertise in managing complex surgical cases through advanced minimally invasive techniques, even in elderly patients with multiple medical complications.
The patient was suffering from pain for 6 years
The 83-year-old lawyer, a resident of Bulandshahr, had been suffering from upper abdominal pain, which spread to his back, for the past six years. Along with this he also had retrosternal discomfort. Initially, he ignored the symptoms and delayed seeking medical advice. Over time, the pain started becoming more frequent and severe, following which he approached Yashoda Medicity for specialist evaluation. Detailed examination revealed that his gall bladder was completely filled with stones and its wall had become thickened due to the long-standing disease. The size of these stones ranged from the size of a small mustard seed to the size of a gram, and their total weight was about 150-200 grams.
Doctor told the challenges of surgery
The presence of approximately 2,000 gallstones—an exceptionally rare finding in clinical practice—made the procedure extremely challenging. Despite the technical complexity, the surgical team completed the complex 90-minute minimally invasive procedure, allowing the patient to recover quickly with minimal post-operative discomfort. Dr. Diwan said, “Cases with gallstones of this magnitude are extremely unusual. What was most worrying was that the patient was silently suffering severe pain for many years before seeking medical attention. We are relieved that he sought care at the right time, because any further delay could have led to serious complications such as jaundice, pancreatitis, or in rare cases, an increased risk of gallbladder cancer.”
He further added, “The surgery itself was very challenging given the huge number of gallstones and the advanced age of the patient. Such complex procedures require a high level of surgical expertise and precision to safely remove the diseased gallbladder without damaging the surrounding tissues and vital structures. Despite these complications, we were able to successfully complete the procedure laparoscopically, allowing the patient to recover remarkably well and return home the very next day. “Seeing him regain his health quickly was very satisfying for our entire team.”
Rapid recovery despite complications
Despite being 83 years of age and having additional medical complications including hypertension and serum electrolyte imbalance, the patient was successfully treated through careful pre-operative optimization, advanced laparoscopic surgery and comprehensive perioperative care by the multi-disciplinary team at Yashoda Medicity. He was admitted on June 15, had surgery on June 16, and was able to walk within just four hours of the procedure. Due to the minimally invasive approach and coordinated post-operative care, he recovered smoothly and was discharged the very next day, on June 17.
Timely treatment is necessary
This rare surgical success reflects the excellence of Yashoda Medicity and its expertise in managing complex cases using advanced minimally invasive techniques. This case also reinforces the importance of seeking timely medical evaluation for persistent abdominal pain and recurring digestive symptoms, as early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious complications as well as ensure a faster recovery.
