France coach Deschamps said captain Mbappe is mentally fine despite the Paraguay senator’s racist comments. The senator called Mbappe a ‘colonised Cameroonian’ and ‘ugly’ after France’s victory, drawing condemnation from many.
boston [यूएस]July 9 (ANI): France head coach Didier Deschamps said captain Kylian Mbappe is “in a good place mentally” ahead of his team’s FIFA World Cup clash against Morocco in the quarter-finals. This statement comes after racist remarks made by Paraguay’s senator Celeste Amarilla. The senator made this comment after France defeated the South American team in a tough match in the Round of 16.
What is the whole matter?
Following France’s 1–0 win over the South American country in the FIFA World Cup round of 16, a Paraguayan senator called Mbappé a “colonized Cameroonian”, “pretending to be French, disgruntled, neo-rich, arrogant and ugly”. Amarilla also said that France “won by a whisker and Mbappé, like his entire team, was nervous and scared throughout the match.” His comments were met with immediate reaction from Mbappé and the French Football Federation, with both condemning his statements. French President Emmanuel Macron and FIFA President Gianni Infantino also condemned Amarilla’s comments on Mbappé.
Speaking before the match, Deschamps said the French captain’s morale is good and the senator’s comments have not distracted or affected the team ahead of the crucial quarter-final clash. “Kilian is in a good place mentally. He’s ready for tomorrow,” Deschamps said, according to Goal.com.
United Nations condemned the comment
The United Nations Human Rights Office condemned Celeste’s comments towards Mbappé as “racist and inhumane” and described it as part of a wider issue of racism in football and sport. UN human rights spokesperson Thameen al-Khaitan condemned the “racist” comments against Mbappé, calling them unacceptable and part of a wider pattern of racism and discrimination in football and sport. According to the UN website, a UN Human Rights spokesperson said, “The racist and dehumanizing comments made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla against French footballer Kylian Mbappé are deplorable and, unfortunately, not an isolated incident. Reports of racist incidents during the FIFA World Cup 2026 reflect a wider phenomenon in football and sport.”
The UN human rights spokesperson urged public authorities, governments, sports organizations and social media platforms to take stronger measures against racism, discrimination and hate speech, as well as ensure effective accountability mechanisms. The UN Human Rights spokesperson added, “Public officials have a greater responsibility to stand against racism, discrimination and hate speech in their speech. States and sports organizations should work proactively to prevent acts of racism and any other form of discrimination. They should also ensure that independent and effective accountability mechanisms are in place. Social media companies also have a responsibility to prevent and address racial discrimination and xenophobic abuse on their platforms in accordance with international human rights standards. Do it.”
In a post on X, UN Human Rights also said that sport should promote equality, respect and dignity, and that dehumanizing language has no place in sport or public discourse. UN Human Rights said on (ANI)
