UPI Without Internet: Now it is possible to make payment through UPI even without internet. NPCI is working on a new NFC based technology, through which offline payments of up to Rs 2,000 can be made through UPI Lite even in flights, underground metro and areas with poor network.
Preparations are underway to make UPI, which has become the largest medium of digital payment in India, even easier. There may soon come a time when even when there is no internet, you will be able to easily make payments through UPI in shops, flights or underground metro. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is working on a new technology, which can make digital payments possible even in case of poor network or no internet.
Offline UPI payment will be done through NFC technology
According to media reports, this new system will be based on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. This means that there will be no need to scan the QR Code. The user simply needs to tap his NFC supported smartphone on the POS machine and the payment will be completed.
The most important thing about this feature will be that neither the customer’s phone will need internet nor the shopkeeper’s POS terminal will need an online connection. This will make payment easier even in areas with network problems.

You can make payment up to Rs 2,000 through UPI Lite
In the initial phase, up to Rs 2,000 can be paid at one time through this facility. For this, the user will have to first add the amount to his UPI Lite Wallet when internet is available. Later the same balance can be used for offline payment.
According to reports, small payments may not require entering the UPI PIN every time. This will make the payment process faster and more convenient than before.
The biggest benefit will be available in flight and underground metro.
Internet is often not available during flights or in the underground metro, which makes it difficult to make digital payments. This new technology of NPCI is being developed especially keeping such circumstances in mind.
However, to use this facility, not only the smartphones but also the POS terminals of the shopkeepers must be certified as per the new system. According to reports, NPCI may soon start certification of such terminals, after which banks and UPI app companies will add this feature to their platforms.
Currently, this feature is in the development stage and its official launch date has not been announced. If this technology is introduced, the problem of payment failure due to lack of internet can be eliminated to a great extent and the digital payment experience will become more seamless than ever.
