Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed his views on the controversy related to stand-up comedian Praneet More. He stressed that freedom of speech is a fundamental right, but it cannot be exercised at the cost of one’s dignity and social responsibility. Speaking to reporters on June 12, 2026, Fadnavis gave his opinion on the uproar over Praneet More’s recent stand-up act. He said, “Yes, the Constitution gives everyone the right to express their views, but it also has some limits.” He said in clear words, “Everyone likes stand-up comedy, to be honest, I do too. But the boundaries of society or someone’s dignity cannot be kept in mind for the sake of laughing and joking. This is not only insulting but also completely wrong.”
‘There are limits to freedom of speech too’
The Chief Minister emphasized that the Constitution gives us freedom of speech but also takes some measures to prevent its misuse. According to Fadnavis, if expressing one’s views without any restraint hurts the dignity of others, then it creates a wrong atmosphere in the society. He said that comedians and artists should understand their responsibilities while performing in front of the audience.
Fadnavis advocated decorum in comedy
Speaking on the subject, Fadnavis said that he appreciates stand-up comedy, but he feels there should be a limit to it. He claimed that comedy should be done following “minimum parameters of dignity” and it is not right to break social conventions or insult people just for the sake of entertainment.
