PlayStation has announced that it will stop producing physical discs for new games starting in January 2028. After this, new games will only be available digitally on the PlayStation Store and retailers. This decision has been taken in view of the increasing popularity of digital media.
There’s big news for video game fans: PlayStation is planning to stop making physical discs for new game releases by 2028, according to reports. This news comes after Take-Two Interactive’s Rockstar Games revealed that the disc version of “Grand Theft Auto 6” will not launch. According to Variety, instead, there will be a digital copy and the option of a “code in a box” as a ‘physical’ offering.
Physical disk will be discontinued from 2028
“As consumer preferences and the entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, the production of physical game discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will be phased out beginning in January 2028,” Sid Shuman, PlayStation’s senior director of content communications, said in an announcement published on the Official PlayStation Blog on Wednesday. He further added, “After this date, new games will be available only in digital format on the PlayStation Store and retailers.”
Existing games will not be affected
Sony clarified that this change will not affect any already released games or games launching on physical disc before January 2028. This means titles coming this year, like Marvel’s Wolverine, will have full disc releases, giving players time to enjoy the physical editions before this change goes into effect in the industry.
The main reason is the inclination towards digital
Shuman described the move to cease disc production as “a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends”, as “the general preference for digital media is significantly leaving physical discs behind.” (ANI)
