post office
A big facility has been started for post office customers. Now some selected account holders will be able to deposit and withdraw money in branch post offices through Aadhaar based e-KYC without any paper process. Earlier this facility was limited only to departmental post offices, but now it has been extended to branch post offices also.
How much amount can be deposited and withdrawn?
Under the new system, account holders who have completed e-KYC can deposit up to Rs 50,000 in any branch post office without filling the pay-in slip. At the same time, after completion of e-KYC, Post Office Savings Account (POSA) holders will be able to withdraw up to Rs 20,000 from any branch post office without any paper process. However, for transactions exceeding this amount, the existing paper process will have to be followed and approval will have to be taken from the post office of the concerned account.
Which accounts will get the benefit?
This facility will be available mainly for the following accounts:
- Post Office Savings Account (POSA)
- Recurring Deposit (RD) Account
- Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA)
If holders of these accounts have completed e-KYC, they can avail this facility at any branch post office.
Now transactions can be done in any post office
The Postal Department has made another important change. If the customer has completed Aadhaar Authentication, then the branch post office will be able to carry out transactions for eligible accounts in any post office in the country, not just its own. However, in accounts where Aadhaar authentication has not been done, transactions will be possible only in the branch post office where the account is operated.
Facility will not be applicable on all accounts
According to the Postal Department, e-KYC facility will be available only for single account. Minor and joint accounts are currently not covered under this facility.
It is necessary to have mobile number and Aadhar link
Changes in e-KYC will be possible only when both Aadhaar number and mobile number are linked in the customer’s CIF (Customer Information File).
The Postal Department has clarified that mobile number will be mandatory for e-KYC and Aadhaar based deposit-withdrawal services.
The new rule will come into effect from September 1, 2026
The Postal Department has announced that from September 1, 2026, no transaction will be possible through the DREAM app in accounts where the mobile number is not linked.
e-KYC will happen after digital consent
Accounts linked to mobile number and Aadhaar will be converted into e-KYC CIF after getting the digital consent of the customer. During this, information like customer’s name, date of birth, gender and address will be obtained from UIDAI database.
Masked Aadhaar number will be mandatory
The Postal Department has instructed all post offices to mask (hide) the Aadhaar number in all account related documents. This rule has been implemented to ensure the privacy and security of Aadhaar.
