Chicago comparison to Iran conflict

According to Chicago Police Department data, 137 people were killed in shooting incidents in March this year, 97 people were killed in February and till June 858 people have been victims of shooting incidents. In contrast, 13 US military service members have been killed during the conflict in Iran, according to CENTCOM. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that “since the war in Iran started… over 273 Americans have been shot in Chicago.”

Political war between Trump and Pritzker

The comments come amid an ongoing political dispute between President Trump and Illinois leaders, in which the President has questioned the leadership of Chicago, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. He suggested that they were failing to maintain order in their home. Trump has frequently used Truth Social to demand that Illinois leaders request federal troops, claiming he could secure Chicago “in a month.”

Repeated calls for federal intervention

Earlier in June, the US President had repeatedly called for federal military intervention in Chicago after at least 24 shooting incidents across the city. “At least 39 injured, 4 killed in weekend shooting in Chicago,” the president said on his Truth social account. He addressed Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for the second time, saying, “Governor Pritzker, I, as President, can fix this quickly and permanently. D.C., Memphis, New Orleans, all have hit record lows, and that too quickly! Call me!”

Earlier, Trump had questioned why the governor had not reached out, and asserted, “I can make Chicago a safer city in a month. In a year, it will be one of the safest cities!!!” Governor Pritzker, responding to the President’s comments, initially mocked Trump over his maintenance of the Washington Monument’s Reflecting Pool and his oversight of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. “I don’t think we should hear from this president about the promises he makes or that he has any idea how to protect us in the state of Illinois,” Pritzker said.
