What were the reasons behind the onset of monsoon in Kerala?
According to the IMD, a significant increase in convective cloud activity was observed over the south-east Arabian Sea during the last two days. Apart from this, strong westerly winds remained active up to a height of about 4.5 kilometers above sea level. The Meteorological Department said that Kerala received widespread rainfall during the last two days, while heavy rainfall was also recorded at many places. These conditions are considered necessary for the arrival of south-west monsoon.
Strong westerly winds played an important role
According to IMD, westerly winds were blowing at a speed of about 20 to 25 knots at the lower level. These strong winds and continuous rains provided a favorable environment for the monsoon to enter Kerala. The Meteorological Department said in its statement that all the necessary conditions set for the onset of monsoon had been fulfilled. On this basis, the arrival of south-west monsoon in Kerala was announced on 4 June 2026.
The effect of El Nino also became a topic of discussion
Meanwhile, a report published on June 2 reported that El Nino conditions were developing, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Due to this, changes in global temperature and rainfall patterns may be seen. Experts believe El Nino conditions could increase the risk of extreme weather events in many parts of the world in the coming months. It may also affect India’s monsoon and rainfall distribution.
