Mirabai Chanu: Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 by lifting 190 kg and became the Commonwealth champion for the third consecutive time.
Mirabai Chanu Wins India’s First Gold: India has made a golden start in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu performed brilliantly in the women’s 48 kg weight category and won the first gold medal for India. The special thing was that he won the Commonwealth Games gold medal for the third consecutive time, leaving behind his nearest rival by a huge margin of 22 kg.
Broke the record by lifting 190 kg weight
Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 190 kg (85 kg snatch + 105 kg clean and jerk). In the snatch round, he broke the Commonwealth Games record twice in a row by lifting 82 kg and then 85 kg. After failing in the first attempt in clean and jerk, he successfully lifted 105 kg in the second attempt and secured the gold medal.

India’s third medal, first gold
This is India’s third medal and first gold in the Commonwealth Games 2026. Earlier, Jhandu Kumar had won bronze medal in para powerlifting and Rishikant Singh had won silver medal in men’s 60 kg category. Mirabai’s victory has given new strength to India’s medal tally.
journey from struggle to peak
The journey of Mirabai Chanu, born in Nongpok Kakching, Manipur, has been inspiring. Despite financial constraints, she used to take lifts from truck drivers to reach Imphal for training. After becoming the first Indian female weightlifter to win silver at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, she has now further cemented her name in history with her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold.
