Chennai: Tamil Nadu has finally got its permanent Director General of Police (DGP). 1994 batch IPS officer Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal has been made the new police chief of the state. Aggarwal is currently the DGP of Border Security Force (BSF) in Delhi. Along with this, he was also holding the additional charge of Special Director General of BSF’s Eastern Command based in Kolkata. A three-member panel of UPSC approved his name.

Let us tell you that the Stalin government had not yet appointed a permanent DGP. A case is also going on in the Supreme Court regarding the appointment of acting DGP. The DMK government has been considering the appointment of DGP as a matter related to the rights of the states.

Mahesh Aggarwal is one of the senior most officers of Tamil Nadu cadre. Recently, the Central Government promoted him to the post of Director General (DGP Rank). Before this, he had held many important positions in Tamil Nadu including Chennai City Police Commissioner. Apart from law and order in Chennai city, he has also held posts like Director General of Armed Police and Special Director General of Crime Branch CID.

Mahesh Kumar was also a part of the expert team which prepared the final report of the Fifth Police Commission for police reforms in Tamil Nadu and submitted it to the government. For his excellent work, he has also been awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Medal.
