The discussion regarding LPG subsidy has once again intensified across the country. Government oil marketing companies (OMCs) have started checking the income of customers receiving gas subsidy. Subsidy can be stopped for consumers or their spouses whose annual taxable income is more than Rs 10 lakh. Companies are also sending warning messages to customers. In such a situation, it is important to know what LPG subsidy is, which companies provide its benefits and what is the eligibility criteria for it.
In the messages being sent by the companies, it is clearly stated that if the annual taxable income of the customer or his/her spouse is found to be more than Rs 10 lakh, then their gas subsidy can be stopped permanently. Customers have been asked to respond within seven days.
What is LPG subsidy?
LPG subsidy is an important scheme of the Central Government, the objective of which is to provide cooking gas to common families at affordable rates. In this system, customers buy LPG cylinders at market price, while the subsidy amount is later transferred directly to their bank account. It is implemented through Direct Benefit Transfer System.

Mainly three government oil companies in the country provide LPG subsidy facility. These include Indane of Indian Oil Corporation, HP Gas of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Gas of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.
Which customers get gas subsidy?
- To get subsidy, customers must have domestic LPG connection. Consumers with commercial or industrial gas connections are not eligible for this scheme. Apart from this, the total annual taxable income of the customer and his spouse should be less than Rs 10 lakh.
- The government has also made it clear that it is necessary to link LPG connection with Aadhaar and bank account. Under the CTC system, the subsidy amount is sent directly to the bank account. Customers who have voluntarily given up subsidy under the ‘Give It Up’ scheme will not get this benefit.
- Meanwhile, oil companies have also implemented DAC system to make the LPG delivery process more secure. Now the cylinder will be delivered only when the customer tells the verification code to the delivery agent. This will help in preventing fake delivery and misuse.
