Experts say that the tuft of hair in the woman’s stomach was formed by her own fault. Actually, this is not a normal problem but a case of deteriorated mental health. This condition of a woman is called trichotillomania in which a person used to pull out his own hair. If he eats them then that situation is called trichophagia. In this the patient eats his own hair but the stomach is unable to digest it. Therefore, the hair eaten over the years started accumulating at one place in his stomach and became a bunch.

This is called Rapunzel Syndrome

Medically, this condition is called Rapunzel syndrome. When this happens, the bundle of hair moves beyond the stomach and spreads to the intestines. If it is not treated on time, the condition can lead to fatal infection. The woman was treated by Dr. Salim Naik, Dr. Puneet Dhar and Dr. Jaya Aggarwal. All of them are part of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of Amrita Hospital. After the surgery, doctors successfully removed the large drichobzoar (tuft of hair) from the woman’s stomach.

According to experts, even though this is a matter related to mental health, parents should pay special attention to their children. Cases of this disease are very rare but if someone falls prey to it then life can also be lost.

Recently, a similar case related to a 7 year old girl came to light in Gorakhpur, UP. The doctor said that often children unknowingly develop many such habits, which the family members ignore considering them normal. But this habit can prove fatal in future. Therefore, parents should take special care of the child.
