Delhi HC Bar Association has also decided to stay away from work on July 16, 2026, in protest against increasing the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts. The association has appealed to the members not to appear in the court. This protest is against increasing the jurisdiction from 2 crores to 10 crores.

New Delhi [भारत]July 15 (ANI): Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) has decided to abstain from work on July 16, 2026 also. The move will further intensify protests against the proposed decision to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of Delhi’s district courts from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10 crore.

In a resolution passed by its executive committee during an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, the DHCBA commended its members for their “full cooperation and solidarity” with the call to abstain from work on July 15. Despite the Bar strongly opposing the proposal, in view of the decision of the Full Court of Delhi High Court regarding enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts, it was unanimously decided to extend the protest for another day.

The Bar Association has requested all its members to refrain from appearing before the Delhi High Court, both physically and virtually, on July 16 as part of the ongoing protest. The proposal was issued by Vikram Singh Panwar, Honorary Secretary of DHCBA.

Why is there protest?

The controversy centers on the proposal to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of Delhi’s district courts from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10 crore. The move will result in a large number of high-value commercial and civil disputes being transferred from the Delhi High Court to the district judiciary.

The DHCBA has consistently opposed this proposal, arguing that such a substantial increase requires extensive consultation with stakeholders and could have far-reaching consequences for the administration of justice. The association has maintained the stance that the Delhi High Court should continue to hear a large class of high-value civil cases.

Lawyers intensified their agitation

As part of its agitation, DHCBA had earlier called for abstaining from work on July 14 and 15. It had also announced that the High Court’s cafeteria, bar room and other bar facilities would remain closed during the protest.

The latest resolution indicates that the lawyers’ body has decided to continue its agitation after taking into account the Full Court’s stance on the proposed increase in pecuniary jurisdiction. (ANI)
